Final Decision for PALY/Gunn Math: Multivariable Calculus Scrapped, replaced by Intro to Proofs Honors

Updated: Mar 24

Two of Silicon Valley’s top-tier institutions, Palo Alto High School and Henry M. Gunn High School, have decided not to offer Multivariable Calculus (MVC). In its place, a new course has been introduced: Introduction to Proofs Honors.

What happened?

The schools’ faculty and curriculum committees concluded that pushing MVC places excessive pressure on high school students. Their perspective is that MVC is primarily geared toward STEM-focused students; introducing it at the high school level is not only premature but also unnecessary for those not pursuing engineering tracks.

What exactly is the "Proof" course?
Many parents are asking: "What is Proof? It sounds so abstract." Simply put, this course is expected to cover:
  • Logical reasoning

  • Mathematical proof techniques (including Direct Proof, Proof by Contradiction, and Mathematical Induction)

  • Fundamentals of Set Theory and Number Theory

  • Rigorous expression of mathematical conclusions

Curriculum Design
The first three quarters of the course will focus heavily on mathematical proofs, while the final quarter will provide an introduction to Multivariable Calculus. This structure ensures that AP Calculus BC students have mastered core calculus concepts before diving into the more advanced material within the Proofs curriculum. The schools believe this prepares students for university-level mathematics while offering a glimpse into broader mathematical fields beyond the standard high school scope.

A Major Blow to Advanced Students For students and families who are ahead in the math track, this is undoubtedly a significant blow. In fact, over the past three years, many Palo Alto students have sought out MVC at local community colleges, such as Foothill College. The original prospect of offering MVC on campus had many families excited.

However, plans often change. In practice, the schools have effectively blocked the implementation of MVC. In its place, the "downgraded" Introduction to Proofs Honors introduces a new layer of uncertainty regarding its actual rigor and how much weight it will carry in college admissions.

The credits listed for this course even vary between the two high schools. Students currently know very little about the class, relying mostly on informal chats with potential instructors and hearsay. The true depth and content of the curriculum won't be clear until student feedback arrives after the term begins in August.
