Talk About Going Hard! Common App Doesn't Update Until August; So Why Do We Have Students Register Accounts Back in June?

Many parents and students share a common misconception: since Common App officially releases its annual update on August 1, registering before then is a waste of time. Here's the hard-edged logic behind why we have students register in June:
I. Account Information Carries Over Automatically (Account Rollover)
This is something many people don't realize. Common App officially supports Account Rollover.
The basic personal information, family background, education history, and extracurricular activities you fill in during June will automatically carry over after the system updates in August.
Registering early means you can knock out all that tedious, dry "administrative paperwork" before the school year ends, instead of competing for time against demanding essay writing in August.
II. Understanding What Supplemental Essays Really Look Like
While the main essay prompts stay relatively fixed each year, it's actually each university's supplemental essays that carry the real weight.
Research in advance: After registering in June, you can pull up last year's prompts as a reference. The supplemental questions at most top schools tend to be consistent year over year.
Word count check: Once you add 10 target schools to your list and discover you're staring down 20+ short essays in total, the visual impact will force a healthy sense of urgency.
Cluster and consolidate: Seeing the prompts early helps you "merge material," identifying which schools' questions can share a common pool of content, so you can build an efficient writing plan.
III. Locking In Recommenders and the Outreach Process
Liberal arts colleges and top-tier universities typically require 2–3 letters of recommendation.
Secure your spot early: By identifying each school's specific recommendation requirements in the system in June (some schools require two teacher letters, others just one), you can formally and politely send teachers their invitations through the system before summer break begins.
Avoid the rush: Outstanding teachers can only handle a limited number of recommendation requests each semester. Reaching out to teachers during August break is not only impolite, but you may also get turned down because the teacher is on vacation or has already filled their quota.
IV. Stress-Testing and Building System Familiarity
The application system is more complex than people imagine, especially when it comes to signing the FERPA waiver and managing different deadlines across universities.
Clear technical hurdles: Early registration gives you plenty of time to figure out which schools require an additional arts portfolio, which schools have special course description requirements, and so on.
Mental preparation: Seeing the countdown and to-do list inside the system effectively helps students shift out of "summer mode" and back into "battle mode."
V. Han Education's Core Recommendations
June: Complete the basic information sections and add 5–10 core target schools.
July: Focus on producing a first draft of the personal statement and study the supplemental prompts.
August: Once the system updates, fill in any gaps and move directly into final essay polishing and submission.
