The College Planning Checklist Every High School Student Should Complete Within the First Month of School
Once the new school year begins, classes, assignments, and extracurricular activities can quickly fill a student’s schedule. If students do not complete some basic planning during the first month of school, they may remain constantly busy without knowing which responsibilities should take priority.
The first step is to review the course schedule. In addition to confirming graduation requirements, students should consider whether their courses provide the foundation needed for possible college majors, whether the overall level of difficulty is reasonable, and whether they can continue investing time in important activities while managing their academic work. If the course load is clearly too demanding or unsuitable, students should learn about their school’s course adjustment policies early instead of waiting until their grades are affected.
Next, students should set several specific goals for the school year. Goals such as “improve my grades” or “participate in more activities” are too general. More effective goals might include completing an SAT or ACT practice test, improving study methods for a particular class, taking responsibility for a project within a core activity, or beginning to explore two or three possible academic fields.
Students should also review their current activities. They need to know which activities they are participating in, how much time each one requires every week, and what they plan to accomplish next. Activities that no longer interest them or have shown little progress over time may need to be reconsidered. For activities that genuinely matter, students should think about how they can take on more responsibility, complete a project, or produce results that can be documented.
Tests, competitions, summer programs, and other important commitments should be organized in a single timeline. Recording deadlines is not enough. Students should also work backward to determine when preparation needs to begin, which materials are required, and what immediate next step they should take.
Students do not need to solve every aspect of the college application process during the first month of school. What they do need is a clear set of priorities for the year, including what to continue, what to adjust, and where to begin next.
