As students enter 12th grade, many immediately begin working on their personal statements. Essays are certainly important, but if application plans, college lists, and material timelines have not yet been finalized, even quickly completed essays may require repeated revisions as the application strategy changes.

The first priority in September is deciding on application plans. Students should consider their college preferences, current academic performance, progress on application materials, and family budget when determining whether ED or EA is appropriate. ED, in particular, should not be chosen hastily simply because the acceptance rate appears higher. The decision should be based on a clear commitment to attend and a thorough evaluation of the cost.

Next, students should create an actionable college list. For each college, they should confirm the school or division and intended major, application plan, supplemental essays, interviews or portfolios, recommendation letter requirements, and standardized testing policies. Scholarships and honors programs may also have separate early deadlines, which should be recorded as part of the application timeline.

School materials should not be overlooked. Many high schools set internal deadlines for transcript requests, School Reports, and recommendation letters. These deadlines may fall several weeks before the colleges’ official deadlines. Students should confirm their school’s procedures as soon as possible and give counselors and teachers enough time to prepare their materials.

Students should also complete a systematic review of their activities and honors in September. In addition to listing each activity, they should record how long they participated, their specific responsibilities, the projects they completed, and the results they achieved. This helps prevent important information from being overlooked when completing applications and allows students to identify which experiences best represent their long term commitment.
