A growing number of families have been asking about UC Merced's new 8-year BS/MD program, SJV PRIME+. The program is a joint initiative with UCSF School of Medicine and UCSF Fresno, designed to train future physicians who will serve California's San Joaquin Valley.
Key Program Details
Program length: 8 years (4 years undergraduate + 4 years medical school)
Undergraduate phase: Completed at UC Merced, with a required major in Biology, Bioengineering, Chemistry, or Public Health
Medical phase: Within the UCSF system, leading to an MD degree
Curriculum structure: Select medical coursework introduced during the UC Merced years; clinical training completed in Fresno
Core appeal: A guaranteed pathway into medical school, removing much of the uncertainty that comes with the traditional pre-med route
Who This Program Is Actually For
Three types of students are the clearest fit:
Students who are already certain about medicine and want to lock in their path early rather than compete for medical school spots later
Students with a genuine and sustained interest in public health, healthcare access, or medical inequality, not just passing curiosity but real experience or developed thinking around these issues
Students with strong academic foundations, particularly in science, who are confident they can maintain a high GPA throughout college. A 3.6 is the floor, and competitive admits will need to go well above that
How the Application Works
The application layers on top of the standard UC application and runs on an earlier, more detailed timeline:
October 1 to November 20: Submit the UC application, selecting UC Merced with the appropriate major and program track
Early December: Submit the supplemental application, including essays and recommender information
Same period: Submit 2 letters of recommendation, ideally from science teachers
January: Select applicants are invited to interview
💡A Note From the Han Education Consultant Team
Admissions is holistic, but the evaluation priorities are fairly clear:
Rigor in high school math and science courses
Sustained commitment to a specific area rather than scattered activities
Experiences or demonstrated awareness related to healthcare and underserved communities
Evidence of a genuine connection to or understanding of the San Joaquin Valley
The program's strength is a defined pathway with concentrated resources and direct access to one of the top medical school systems in the country. The tradeoff is that it requires committing to a medical career early and maintaining strong academic performance consistently throughout college. For students who are already set on medicine and have a real interest in community health and healthcare equity, this pathway is worth prioritizing over the traditional pre-med route.
