Why the Common App Doesn't Let Parents Log Into Their Child's Account—Yet Designed a Dedicated Parent Account

By design, the Common App keeps parents from touching the student's actual application. There's no parent authorization feature, no shared view. Whatever happens inside the student's account, parents can't see it at the system level. But it does provide a separate account type for parents, called "Parent or Other Adult." It's free, and takes five minutes to sign up.

📌 What This Account Is

An independent, parallel account. Once you register, the interface looks essentially the same as an applicant's view. You can walk through every section of the application form and look up requirements, deadlines, and essay prompts for all of the 1,200+ member universities. It has no binding relationship whatsoever to your child's account. This is intentional. The application belongs to the student, and universities communicate directly with the applicant by default. The purpose of this account is clear: to give parents a space to research the process on their own, without needing to borrow the student's login or set up a fake student account to poke around.

📌 How to Register

1. Go to commonapp.org and click "Create an account" in the top right.

2. Under account type, select "Parent or other adult" (do not select "First-year student," which is the student account).

3. Fill in your email, name, and password to complete registration.

   
   

📌 The Three Places Where Parents Are Actually Involved in the System

1. The Family section. When the student fills out the application, they'll need their parents' education and career information, so have this ready in advance.

2. The ED binding agreement. Once the student enters a parent's email, the parent will receive an e-signature link. Just sign through the link.

3. The application fee. When the student submits from their own account, they can pay using a parent's card.

None of these three involvement points require the parent to have an account first.
