When applying to U.S. colleges, essays are one of the core components. Different systems and schools have clear requirements for essay length and format. Below are the most common types and their writing standards.
Common App Personal Statement
Number of prompts: Choose 1 out of 7
Platform: Common App (mainly for private universities)
Word count: 250–650 words (recommended: close to the upper limit)
Content: Personal growth, values, motivations, turning points—show who you are
Supplemental Essays Two common types:
1. Why This School
Word count: 100–300 words
Content: Specific reasons for applying—courses, programs, professors, campus culture
2. Why This Major
Word count: 150–300 words
Content: Origin of interest, academic experience, future goals
UC Personal Insight Questions (PIQs)
Platform: University of California (UC system)
Number of prompts: Choose 4 out of 8
Word limit per response: Up to 350 words
Content: Achievements, challenges, academic interests, leadership—focus on specific actions and reflection
Format: Separate responses for each question; no need for a single personal statement
