Do Colleges Check Your Social Media?

Most colleges don’t actively check social media, but that doesn’t mean no one is watching.

Admissions officers typically don’t search for every applicant’s social media accounts. However, if you’ve participated in public competitions, events, been featured in the media, or mentioned your account in your application, it could draw attention.

Inappropriate or extreme content can lead to rejection or even rescinded offers. Examples include:

  • Discriminatory, violent, or hateful remarks resulting in revoked admissions

  • Photos involving drug use, underage drinking, or illegal activities can reflect poorly on your character

Social media isn’t all negative—it can actually work in your favor if used well. You can use platforms to showcase:

  • Artwork, volunteer work, writing, or personal projects

  • Unique interests and creativity through YouTube channels, photography accounts, or blogs—many students have impressed admissions officers this way

It’s not recommended to include social media links in your application—unless it’s directly relevant to your academic or extracurricular profile. For example:

  • If you're applying for an arts program and your Instagram serves as your portfolio

  • If you run a well-maintained blog or public account related to photography, science outreach, coding, etc.
