Many 11th graders entering application season this year suddenly realize they have done quite a few activities, but may lack clear evidence of leadership or impact. The good news is that it is not too late to turn things around. The key is to amplify the impact of what you are already doing, rather than starting a bunch of new activities from scratch.
Strategy 1: Take on more responsibility in existing clubs
If you are already part of a school club, consider taking the initiative to organize an event or talk, help a teacher or club leader plan a project or competition, or train new members and lead a small group.
Even without an official title, if you can show that you are leading people and making things happen, that demonstrates leadership.
Strategy 2: Step into a teaching assistant or assistant role
Many sports, music, and interest-based activities look for teaching assistants, for example:
Tutoring younger students
Leading training sessions or group activities at school or in the community
This kind of experience shows both a sense of responsibility and meaningful impact on your community.
Strategy 3: Take on a CIT role at a summer camp
Many summer camps offer CIT (Counselor in Training) programs that combine community service with leadership experience, such as:
Foothills Nature Preserve
Mitchell Park
Palo Alto Art Center
Camp Galileo by Galileo Learning
CITs typically assist teachers in working with younger children, organize activities or lessons, and manage a small group. These are all genuinely meaningful leadership experiences.
Strategy 4: Launch your own passion project
If it is difficult to level up your role in existing activities, consider starting a project of your own. The key is to build on something you are already doing, for example:
Know how to code → Build a learning tool or website
Study music or art → Organize a community performance or teach others
Interested in research → Conduct a data analysis or small-scale study
💡 Advice from the Han Education Team:
Time is getting tight in 11th grade and there is a lot on your plate. Building leadership at this stage means upgrading your existing experiences into roles with real responsibility and impact.
As long as you are heading in the right direction, there is still plenty of time to produce strong results.
