The 3 Most Common Mistakes Students Make When Choosing Courses in 9th Grade

Many parents and students dive into high school like it's an arms race for course selection, and end up walking straight into trouble. Over years of planning with students, we run into the same 3 problems almost every year.

Mistake 1:

Blindly stacking up AP and Honors courses without considering the student's actual learning pace and interests. The result is a GPA that starts sliding in 9th grade and becomes very hard to recover from later. Many parents reason that "getting used to the difficulty early is a good thing," but 9th graders are just transitioning out of middle school, and their study methods and time management skills are still being refined. Piling on high-difficulty courses at this stage tends to erode the student's confidence and motivation rather than genuinely build capacity.

Mistake 2:

Ignoring the school's course structure and prerequisite requirements, picking courses at random, and then discovering by 11th grade that the advanced courses they want to take are blocked because a prerequisite wasn't completed. Every school's course catalog spells out prerequisite requirements, but many families never seriously read that document when picking courses in 9th grade. They go by instinct or a friend's suggestion, and by the time the problem surfaces, the window for adjustment has usually passed.

Mistake 3:

Copying whatever "everyone else's kid" is taking, without mapping out a 4-year course path that fits the student's own possible major and overall college application strategy. Course selection is a decision that has to look 4 years ahead, and even further, all the way to the college application. Making choices purely by lateral comparison easily produces a schedule that "looks competitive" but doesn't actually help the student. 9th grade may look like just a "foundation-building" year, but the underlying logic of your course choices often determines how much room you'll have over the next 3 years. The earlier you plan clearly, the lower the cost of adjustments later.
