After submitting your Early Action/Early Decision (EA/ED) applications in November, students and parents can breathe a small sigh of relief. However, before the Regular Decision (RD) deadlines arrive, it is crucial to ensure your early applications are complete, prepare for potential results, and refine your RD strategy.
1. Ensure Application Materials are Complete
Activate and Monitor Application Portals: After receiving a confirmation email from a university, register for their online application portal immediately. Check it weekly to ensure all materials are received and watch for interview invitations. Remember to check your spam and promotions folders regularly.
Confirm Required Documents: Ensure the school has received your official transcript, school report, and letters of recommendation. Once available, 12th-grade mid-year reports should also be submitted promptly.
Seize Supplemental Opportunities: Some universities allow extra materials in the portal, such as additional essays or video responses. We recommend submitting these to demonstrate your enthusiasm. Note that some special programs or scholarships may have independent applications that require proactive tracking.
2. Complete Financial Aid Applications
The FAFSA and CSS Profile are now open. Set aside ample time to organize your financial documents. Submitting early often increases the likelihood of securing financial aid.
3. Demonstrate Continued Interest
Stay engaged by attending virtual or in-person info sessions, college fairs, and campus tours. Following admissions social media accounts is also helpful. However, be mindful—stay visible without being intrusive or harassing admissions officers.
4. Maintain Academic Performance and Testing
Do not let your senior year grades slip. Maintain your GPA and avoid any failing marks. If you plan to take AP exams or retake standardized tests for a higher score, continue your preparation diligently.
5. Prepare for Deferrals
Write a Letter of Continued Interest (LOCI): If you are deferred and the school allows it, submit a sincere LOCI. Update them on your recent achievements and reaffirm that they remain your top choice. Admissions officers from schools like Cornell and Tulane have noted that a lack of response is often interpreted as a lack of interest.
Pivot Your Strategy: Some schools allow you to switch to ED II if you are deferred or rejected from your initial EA choice. Familiarize yourself with these policies early.
6. Finalize the RD College List
Adjust your Regular Decision list based on your early results. If you have already secured an "anchor" or "safety" school through EA, you may consider a more aggressive reach-heavy strategy for RD.
7. Prioritize Rolling Admissions
While fixed-deadline applications should be polished until they are perfect, Rolling Admissions work differently. The earlier you apply, the more spots are available. Prioritize these applications immediately after the early round finishes.
